The FT-60R is aimed squarely at Technician-class operators looking for a dependable dual-band FM handheld without the complexity of newer digital modes. It also suits experienced hams who want a dedicated analog backup that won't let them down during simplex or repeater work.
The radio delivers 5W on both 2m and 70cm, covers a wide receive range from 108 to 520 MHz and 700 to 999 MHz (cellular excluded), and stores up to 1,000 alphanumeric memory channels, which is more than adequate for any repeater-heavy operating environment. CTCSS/DCS (PL/DPL) and DTMF are both onboard, and NOAA weather alert support adds genuine utility for portable field use. Be clear about what this radio is not: there is no DMR, no APRS, no fusion capability whatsoever.
At $189.95 for a strictly analog FM transceiver in 2024, the value proposition is weak relative to competing handhelds that offer more at similar or lower price points. This is a radio for operators who specifically want a proven Yaesu FM platform and have no need for digital modes; those chasing capability per dollar should look elsewhere.

Make sure you are getting the YAESU FT-60RE from IMPEX via Amazon. There is no doubt, the YAESU FT-60RE is an excellent amateur radio. We bought it for a specific purpose. We live in a rural Mexican community where 7 of our neighbors experienced burglary or theft and one home invasion in the last fe...
Been a great little radio for me. Built like tank and has a good feel. Easy to program as long as you know WHAT your programming, specifically repeater settings. I like the analog squelch very much. The charging cradle is a bear to get radio into and lack of USB charging are the most annoying issues...
The FT-60R is a great general-purpose dual-band (2m/70cm) ham transceiver. I've used this radio in the field as a volunteer search & rescue operator, and it has performed admirably in all sorts of conditions. For the price, it can't be beat. First the physical qualities: It's built solidly! Its body...
