Yaesu FTM-400XDR
A capable graphical APRS and Fusion mobile for operators who want a visual map display in the vehicle, though the lack of Bluetooth and its age in the lineup are real considerations at the premium price.
Decision helper
Is this mobile radio right for you?
Yes, if you're…
- ✓APRS-focused operators who want a live graphical map display mounted in the vehicle
- ✓Operators who monitor wideband receive alongside their ham band work
- ✓System Fusion users who prioritize a visual interface over Bluetooth connectivity
- ✓Base station or portable vehicle setups where the touchscreen is easy to reach
Skip it, if you're…
- ✕Operators who need Bluetooth for hands-free in-vehicle audio
- ✕Those whose local repeater network does not support System Fusion or Wires-X
- ✕Buyers comparing the latest-generation Yaesu mobiles who want current features at a premium price
The good and the bad
What we like
- Large touchscreen color display with live APRS map and GPS position readout
- 50-watt output on VHF and UHF
- Wideband receive from 108-470 MHz and 800-999 MHz for monitoring beyond the ham bands
- microSD slot for memory backup and audio recording
- APRS at both 1200 and 9600 bps with built-in GPS
What we don't
- No Bluetooth; hands-free audio requires external hardware
- Older-generation flagship; newer Yaesu mobiles offer refinements at a similar price
- Touchscreen interface is not universally preferred for in-vehicle use

Overview
The FTM-400XDR is Yaesu's touchscreen-led take on the dual-band mobile, built around a large color display that doubles as a live APRS map and GPS position readout. Running 50 watts on both VHF and UHF, it supports C4FM System Fusion digital plus analog FM, APRS at 1200 and 9600 bps, and a microSD slot for logging and audio recording. The wideband receive spans 108-470 MHz and 800-999 MHz (with cellular frequencies blocked), making it useful for monitoring aviation, public safety, and other services alongside the ham bands.
The touchscreen interface divides users clearly: operators who spend time monitoring APRS traffic or tracking station positions on a map find the visual layout genuinely useful; operators who prefer tactile controls and quick knob adjustments may find themselves fighting the interface in motion. There is no Bluetooth, which puts hands-free operation out of reach without adding external hardware.
As with the FTM-300DR, the digital layer is proprietary C4FM Fusion, which means the radio's digital capabilities are tied directly to local Fusion repeater and Wires-X activity. The FTM-400XDR predates some of the refinements found in newer Yaesu mobiles, and the absence of Bluetooth stands out at the premium price point. For an operator who primarily wants a rich graphical APRS interface and wideband monitoring, it remains a solid if older-generation choice.
