The KT-8900 is the original radio in QYT's KT-8900 chassis family, later followed by the KT-8900D and KT-7900D. It puts out a flat 20 watts on VHF and UHF, holds 200 memory channels, and supports quad watch so you can monitor two bands at once. At 2.6 pounds it is a compact unit that mounts easily under a dash, and a programming cable is included.

With 337 ratings at 4.4 stars it has the strongest review record in this budget lineup. The catch is programming: CHIRP has a driver for this radio but cannot reliably drive it, because the non-R version of the KT-8900 never performs the reset that puts it into programming mode. You are on QYT's own software, and front-panel entry on a radio like this is genuinely tedious. The KT-8900D is the version CHIRP does support, and it costs about the same. Unless you want this exact model's review history, that is the one to buy.
