Dual-band DMR at $70 sounds like a deal until you read the fine print, so we did it for you.

The Baofeng DM-1701 targets Technician-class operators taking their first steps into DMR, or analog users curious about digital without committing serious money. At $70, it sits at the entry tier of dual-band DMR handhelds, competing against the likes of the TYT MD-UV380 for budget-conscious buyers who want talk group access without the sticker shock.
The headline capability is DMR Tier II with 3,000 memory channels, 10,000 digital talk groups, and 120,000 contact storage, which is genuinely more headroom than most entry-level operators will ever fill. The 1.77-inch color TFT display helps navigation, and compatibility with open-source GD77 firmware gives technically inclined users a meaningful upgrade path beyond the stock software. TX power specs were not disclosed by the manufacturer for our review, which is an unusual omission worth noting before purchase.
Where the DM-1701 stumbles is in overall execution. It is not water resistant, key spec data remains thin, and it scores middling across features and value categories. If you want an inexpensive DMR entry point and are comfortable flashing third-party firmware, this radio has a case. If you need field reliability or polished out-of-box performance, look further up the price ladder.

Great DMR radio to start off with. You really don’t need to spend $300 when you can pay a fraction of the price for this one. I purchased it because I wanted to get into DMR and see what it was all about. After learning how to flash the software and add talk groups, everything else was a breeze. I g...
The 1701 is a pretty-not-bad DMR HT that *can* run OpenGD77 firmware, but works reasonably well with the stock firmware. If you are on a tight budget and want to try out DMR, give this one a try. As with any DMR getting a localized codeplug may be as easy as asking a nearby ham, or (worst case) coul...
Great entry level DMR radio. Battery life is good, even for frequent transmission at 5W. I highly recommend flashing it with OpenGD77. You can't beat this price and the sound quality is very usable. Skip getting a UV5K and its clones if you want a radio that's incredibly versatile, durable, and chea...
