The VX-6R is built for the operator who spends time in the field and needs a radio that can take a beating. Submersible to 3 feet for 30 minutes and housed in a magnesium alloy chassis, it targets the hiker, SOTA activator, or emergency comms volunteer who prioritizes physical durability over feature density. At $329.95, though, it's competing against radios that offer significantly more for the money.
On the RF side, the VX-6R covers 144, 222, and 440 MHz for transmit, with 5W output on 2m and 70cm and a reduced 1.5W on the 222 MHz band. The wide receive coverage (0.5 to 999 MHz) including aircraft, marine, and shortwave is genuinely useful for situational awareness in the field. Features and overall value score weakly against current alternatives, which is worth weighing seriously before purchase.
This is a capable, durable analog FM radio, nothing more. If triband coverage and proven waterproofing are your primary requirements and you're not concerned with modern digital modes like DMR or C4FM, the VX-6R delivers. Operators expecting current-generation feature depth at this price point should look elsewhere.

Great radio, not cheap has not broken on me keep on the rig, my second radio
I've had this radio for a bit over a month. It's very small for what it does and very solidly built. A hunting buddy and I decided to get our HAM licenses and these radios for more reliable service versus GMSR radios when in the field. These radios will easily go into a pocket. We have not yet had t...
