Yaesu
The FT-5DR is the definitive Fusion handheld for operators fully invested in the WiRES-X ecosystem, with dual receive, IPX7 waterproofing, and a touchscreen band scope to back up the premium price. Casual Fusion users and anyone outside the C4FM world should look elsewhere.

The FT-5DR is built for the operator who has already committed to Yaesu's System Fusion ecosystem and wants the best hardware it runs on. This is not a gateway radio or a budget compromise; it is the top-of-the-line Fusion handheld, and everything about its spec sheet reflects that positioning. If your local repeaters run C4FM or you are building a WiRES-X portable node, the FT-5DR gives you the full toolkit. If you are DMR-only or predominantly analog, it does not belong in your shack at this price.
The hardware genuinely impresses. Two independent receivers let you monitor V+V, U+U, or any cross-band combination simultaneously, with separate LED indicators for each. The full-color TFT touchscreen is paired with a real-time Band Scope covering up to 79 channels around your current frequency, a feature you will not find on cheaper Fusion radios. IPX7 waterproofing handles brief submersion, built-in GPS feeds a 1200/9600 bps APRS modem, and Bluetooth covers hands-free operation via the optional SSM-BT10 headset. At 5W output across 144/430 MHz and 1,200 memory channels, the core radio capabilities are solid. Our feature score of 71 reflects a genuinely capable platform.
The value score of 28 tells the other side of the story. At $509.88, you are paying a steep premium, and the tradeoffs are real: no CHIRP support means you are locked into Yaesu's ADMS-14 or RT Systems software for programming, and the overall score of 64 places it only in the Good tier despite the flagship price. The portability score of 51 and 282 g weight confirm this is not a shirt-pocket radio. If C4FM infrastructure is active in your area and WiRES-X matters to you, the FT-5DR justifies the cost. If it does not, save $230 and buy the FT-70DR instead.
