The 42.5-inch Tactical stretches to 1.68 wavelengths, creating multiple nulls and lobes that actually result in negative gain of around -1.0 dBi. This longer design needs a proper ground plane to function, but a handheld radio cannot provide one. Abbree claims 5 dBi for the Tactical, which is overstated by about 6 dB and not supported by its physical length.

The AR-771C's modest 2.15 dBi claim is realistic and backed by its electrical length. At 389 mm, it balances portability with actual radiating efficiency.

Buy the AR-771C if you want genuine GMRS performance on a handheld without compromising practicality. Buy the Tactical only if you plan to mount it on a vehicle roof or other ground plane where its longer length could theoretically help, though you will need to verify its actual performance since the specs are questionable.
