ABBREE AR-771C GMRS (SMA-Female)

If you run a GMRS radio with an SMA-Female jack, this is a well-built, honestly rated upgrade over the stock antenna for under $9. Just know it does one band, and it does not fold down small.

What 389 mm Buys You

An antenna radiates according to its length measured in wavelengths, not according to the number on the packaging. Here is where this one lands on each band it covers.

Decision helper

Is this antenna right for you?

Yes, if you're…

  • GMRS handhelds that came with a short stock antenna
  • Campers and off-roaders who want more GMRS range for cheap

Skip it, if you're…

  • Dual-band 2m/70cm ham radios
  • Anyone who wants a compact, low-profile whip

Tradeoffs

The good and the bad

What we like

  • Genuinely strong electrical length for the GMRS band, close to 5/8 wave
  • Gain claim is conservative rather than inflated
  • Cheap, under $9
  • SMA-Female fits most GMRS-capable Baofeng and TIDRADIO handhelds

What we don't

  • At 15.3 inches it is long for everyday carry
  • GMRS-only; not a dual-band 2m/70cm antenna

Overview

The ABBREE AR-771C is a 15.3-inch flexible whip built specifically for the GMRS band (462-467 MHz) rather than repurposed from a 2m/70cm ham design. It uses an SMA-Female connector, the jack found on most GMRS-capable Baofeng, TIDRADIO and Radioddity handhelds, and it currently runs under $9.

At 389mm, this antenna measures out to roughly 0.60 wavelengths on the GMRS band, past the half-wave point and into the 5/8-wave range that is about as good as a single element gets on a handheld with no ground plane. The manufacturer's 2.15 dBi claim is actually conservative next to what that length can support, which is refreshing in a category where inflated numbers are the norm. The tradeoff is the usual one: at over 15 inches it is not a discreet or pocketable antenna, and it only covers the GMRS band, so it is the wrong pick if you also run a dual-band ham radio off the same whip.
