Overview
The DB20-G is the GMRS community's default first mobile: in the largest forum thread on the topic, it drew more recommendations than anything else at its price, with one regular calling it flatly the correct answer. It plugs into a cigarette lighter, so there is no permanent wiring job. It advertises 20 watts (FCC measures about 19.5 watts conducted), covers 500 channels with repeater capability, adds VOX, syncs its display with Radioddity handhelds, and scans GMRS, business UHF/VHF, and NOAA weather. It is CHIRP-supported.
Owner reports flag real rough edges: a cryptic, inconsistent menu, occasional scan or squelch sticking open, and a built-in speaker quiet enough that most owners add an external one. There is no IP rating. None of that has dented its reputation as the budget mobile most people land on first.
