The NA-701 is the clear winner for general use, though the choice depends on your primary band.

The most important difference is electrical length. The NA-701 operates at 0.29 wavelengths on UHF (435 MHz), delivering realistic performance around 0.8 dBi. The NA-701G sacrifices 6 centimeters of length to tune for GMRS at 465 MHz, where it falls to just 0.22 wavelengths and realistically achieves only -0.4 dBi. Both antennas are compromised by their short electrical length, but the NA-701 is noticeably less so. The NA-701G also suffers from overstated claimed gain, listing 2.15 dBi when its actual performance is closer to -0.4 dBi.

The NA-701 suits operators who primarily use amateur UHF (435 MHz) or need a general-purpose handheld antenna. The NA-701G is specifically for GMRS users who must accept the performance limitations of a band-specific shortened design.

Get the NA-701 unless you operate exclusively on GMRS. It costs the same and provides noticeably better performance where it matters.
