The AR-771C is the clear winner for GMRS use on handhelds.

The critical difference is electrical length. At 389 mm, the AR-771C operates at 0.60 wavelengths on GMRS, delivering realistic performance around 3.1 dBi. The NA-701G's 140 mm length reaches only 0.22 wavelengths, a quarter-wave design that produces negative gain near -0.4 dBi. Nagoya's claimed 2.15 dBi figure is overstated by roughly 2.6 dB and contradicts what the antenna's physical dimensions actually support. On a handheld radio without a ground plane, electrical length is everything; marketing claims mean nothing.

The AR-771C costs $8.95 versus $18.98 for the Nagoya, adding insult to injury. You're paying more than double for an antenna that performs substantially worse and makes false claims about its capabilities.

Buy the AR-771C if you want honest GMRS performance at a fair price. Buy the NA-701G only if you specifically need a very compact antenna and accept severe performance loss as the tradeoff.

Get the AR-771C. It outperforms the competition by a wide margin, costs half as much, and won't mislead you about what it can do.
