HYS-771N Dual-Band Whip (SMA-Female) vs Nagoya NA-701G (GMRS)

The HYS-771N is the clear winner. Both antennas cost nearly the same, but the HYS-771N delivers genuine dual-band capability while the Nagoya NA-701G is optimized for a single frequency band.

The most important difference is electrical length on UHF. The HYS-771N reaches 5/8 wavelength at 435 MHz, yielding realistic 2.9 dBi gain. The Nagoya, at quarter-wave on GMRS 465 MHz, delivers only minus 0.4 dBi. Nagoya's claimed 2.15 dBi gain is overstated by about 2.6 dB and unsupported by its short physical length. On VHF, the HYS-771N is electrically short but still usable; the Nagoya simply does not operate there.

The HYS-771N should appeal to operators who want a handheld antenna covering both VHF and UHF FM bands with respectable UHF performance. The Nagoya NA-701G is intended only for GMRS users and those accepting its limitations in exchange for compact size, though even GMRS operators will find performance underwhelming.

Choose the HYS-771N if you operate on either VHF or UHF, or both. Its honest design and realistic gain make it the better value at virtually identical pricing.
