HYS-771N Dual-Band Whip (SMA-Female) vs Nagoya NA-701 (SMA-Female)

The HYS-771N is the clear winner for most users.

The critical difference is electrical length on VHF. The 771N reaches 0.19 wavelengths at 146 MHz, delivering realistic performance around -1.0 dBi. The Nagoya NA-701, at only 0.10 wavelengths on VHF, operates so far below quarter wave that its performance suffers significantly at -3.6 dBi. That 2.6 dB difference translates directly to weaker VHF reception and transmission. On UHF, the 771N's 5/8 wave design edges out the NA-701's quarter wave by roughly 2 dB as well.

The NA-701 claims 2.15 dBi gain, which is overstated for its actual electrical length. The 771N's claimed 2.5 dBi is more honest to its specifications.

Both cost essentially the same and use identical connectors, so price and compatibility are non-factors. The NA-701 is more compact, which matters only if your radio's form factor demands it.

Buy the HYS-771N if you operate across both bands and want solid performance. Buy the Nagoya NA-701 only if you need a shorter antenna and can tolerate notably weaker VHF capability.
