Baofeng UV-82 vs Retevis RA79

The UV-82 is the better choice for most buyers. The decisive factor is price combined with owner feedback: the UV-82 costs $10 less and carries a higher Amazon rating from a much larger review sample (4.4/5 from 830 reviews versus 4.5/5 from 278). Both radios share the same core features, lack DMR and APRS, and support CHIRP programming. The UV-82 delivers 8W of transmit power while we do not have the RA79's power specification. The RA79 is lighter at 225g compared to 260g, which matters for all-day carry, and the UV-82 lists an IP54 rating while the RA79 has no published rating. Neither radio offers advanced features like GPS or digital modes.

The UV-82 should appeal to budget-conscious operators and those starting in the hobby who want established user feedback and proven reliability at the lowest price. The RA79 suits buyers who prioritize lighter weight and can accept less owner review data to draw from. For nearly everyone else, the UV-82 offers better value.
