The UV-9G takes Baofeng's budget GMRS formula and puts it inside a genuinely sealed IP67 body, rated for a meter of submersion for 30 minutes. That is the entire pitch: a certified GMRS radio that survives rain, dust, and a dunk in a creek, at a price still well under $50. The sealed case makes it noticeably chunkier than the UV-5G Plus, and the waterproof accessory port is more fiddly to work with than an open jack. For a boat bag, a rainy-climate hiking kit, or anywhere the cheapest handhelds would not survive the trip, it earns its place. If you do not need the sealing, the UV-5G Plus does most of the same job for less money.
