APX-8000 vs Retevis RA79

The Retevis RA79 is the clear winner for most users.

The single most important differentiator is price paired with owner satisfaction. The RA79 costs $35 versus the APX-8000's $130, while owners report significantly higher satisfaction with the RA79 at 4.5/5 stars across 278 reviews compared to 3.5/5 from 30 reviews for the APX-8000. The RA79 also offers CHIRP support for easier programming, whereas the APX-8000 does not. Both radios lack DMR, APRS, and GPS capabilities, so neither has an advantage there. The APX-8000 claims higher transmit power at 12W, but we lack the RA79's TX power specification, so we cannot definitively compare this advantage.

The APX-8000 makes sense only if higher transmit power is critical to your use case and you can confirm the spec gap doesn't favor the RA79.

The Retevis RA79 is the better value for budget-conscious operators who want solid owner-reported performance and programming convenience. The APX-8000 is worth considering only if maximum transmit power is your priority and the APX's power advantage justifies the premium and lower satisfaction ratings.

Buy the RA79 unless proven TX power specs change the equation.
