Icom IC-7100

The IC-7100 covers HF, 6 meters, VHF, and UHF in one transceiver, running 100 watts on HF and 6 meters with reduced power on the higher bands, and supports SSB, CW, AM, FM, RTTY, and D-STAR digital voice. The receiver tunes an unusually wide range, from 30 kHz up to 199.99 MHz, which means general coverage listening extends well past the amateur bands into VHF utility traffic.

The main unit and control head separate, a layout built for vehicle installs where the radio body goes under a seat or in the trunk while only the control panel sits within reach. At 2.3 kilograms combined, it mounts more easily than a full desktop rig. With 495 memory channels, it holds an enormous repeater list, useful for operators who travel and preprogram local repeaters in advance.

The honest trade-off is that the IC-7100 has no built-in antenna tuner and no spectrum waterfall, so it leans on a simpler display and conventional receiver architecture rather than the SDR-based scope you get on the IC-7300 or IC-705. D-STAR is also Icom's own digital voice standard, so its usefulness depends on whether D-STAR repeaters or reflectors are active where you operate. As an all-in-one mobile HF and VHF/UHF radio, though, few other options cover this much ground in one box.
