Retevis HA1UV vs Retevis RA79

The RA79 is the better choice for most users. Both radios share nearly identical core specifications: neither offers DMR, APRS, or GPS, both support CHIRP programming, and both earn strong owner ratings (4.6/5 and 4.5/5 respectively). The critical difference is price and portability. The RA79 costs half as much at $35 while weighing 112 grams less, making it significantly more practical for mobile use. The HA1UV's IP67 rating provides weather resistance that the RA79 doesn't list, which matters if you'll expose the radio to heavy rain or submersion. However, owners of both radios report satisfaction at nearly identical levels, suggesting neither has obvious field reliability problems that show up in user feedback. The HA1UV justifies its premium only if weather sealing is essential to your use case. For budget-conscious operators, frequent travelers, or those needing a backup radio, the RA79 delivers comparable performance at a substantially lower cost. Choose the HA1UV only if you regularly work in wet conditions and want documented waterproofing. Otherwise, save the money and go with the RA79.
