Radtel RT-470X vs Retevis RA79

The Retevis RA79 is the better choice for most users. Both radios share identical feature sets—neither offers DMR, APRS, or GPS—and both support CHIRP programming. Where they meaningfully differ is weight and buyer feedback. The RA79 weighs 225g versus the RT-470X's 267g, making it noticeably more portable for extended use. More significantly, the RA79 reports a 4.5/5 owner rating across 278 Amazon reviews compared to the RT-470X's 4.1/5 from 256 reviews. What owners are actually reporting matters here, and the RA79 has earned higher satisfaction marks from a comparable sample size. The RT-470X edges ahead on RadioRanked's overall score due to its lower price and how that spec composite works, but that gap reflects listed specifications per dollar, not real-world performance or user experience. At only five dollars more, you're getting both a lighter radio and stronger owner satisfaction with the RA79. Buy the RA79 unless your budget is absolutely fixed at thirty dollars. The RT-470X makes sense only as an absolute minimum-cost entry point.
