Performance is derived from the antenna's length in wavelengths on each band it covers, not from the advertised gain. How we score →

Length versus wavelength

What 508 mm Buys You

An antenna radiates according to its length measured in wavelengths, not according to the number on the packaging. Here is where this one lands on each band it covers.

BandWavelengthThis antennaWorks out as
VHF146 MHz2053 mm0.25 λquarter wave
UHF435 MHz689 mm0.74 λfull wave

Decision helper

Is this antenna right for you?

Yes, if you're…

  • Steel-roofed vehicles where drilling is not an option
  • Switching an antenna between vehicles

Skip it, if you're…

  • Aluminum, fiberglass, or composite vehicle bodies
  • Permanent installs (a drilled NMO mount is more secure long-term)

Tradeoffs

The good and the bad

What we like

  • Complete plug-and-play kit: antenna, mag base, 5m coax, connector
  • Claimed gain matches our model closely on both bands
  • No drilling required
  • 100W handling

What we don't

  • Requires a steel roof or panel; the magnetic base will not grip aluminum or fiberglass
  • 20 inches is long enough to need care in garages and low clearances
  • 5m of coax is the only length offered, which may not suit every routing

Overview

This HYS kit pairs a 20-inch (508 mm) dual-band whip with a heavy-duty magnetic NMO base, 5 meters of RG-58 coax, and a PL-259 connector, so nothing else needs to be bought. HYS claims 3.0 dBi on 2m and 5.0 dBi on 70cm at 100 watts.

At roughly a quarter wave on 2m and 0.74 wavelengths on 70cm, near full wave, our model lands close to those same figures on both bands, so the claim is a fair one rather than an inflated one. Like every magnetic mount, it only works on a steel roof or trunk with enough surface area under the base; no drilling, but also no substitute for actual metal.
