HYS Dual-Band Handheld Whip (BNC)
Same antenna, better price, deeper review record. If your radio takes BNC, this is the better of HYS's two 396mm whips.
Proprietary RR score
How we scored it
Performance is derived from the antenna's length in wavelengths on each band it covers, not from the advertised gain. How we score →
Length versus wavelength
What 396 mm Buys You
An antenna radiates according to its length measured in wavelengths, not according to the number on the packaging. Here is where this one lands on each band it covers.
| Band | Wavelength | This antenna | Works out as |
|---|---|---|---|
| VHF146 MHz | 2053 mm | 0.19 λ | electrically short |
| UHF435 MHz | 689 mm | 0.57 λ | 5/8 wave |
Decision helper
Is this antenna right for you?
Yes, if you're…
- ✓Icom, Vertex, Motorola, and Kenwood handhelds with BNC connectors
- ✓Buyers who want the 771N's performance at a lower price
Skip it, if you're…
- ✕SMA-connector radios (wrong jack; get the SMA-Female 771N instead)
Tradeoffs
The good and the bad
What we like
- Strong 70cm electrical length, same as the SMA-Female 771N
- Cheaper than the SMA version of the same antenna
- Large, well-established review record (500+)
- Credible per-band gain claims
What we don't
- Mediocre on 2m, like any whip this length
- BNC only fits BNC-equipped radios, a smaller pool than SMA

Overview
The HYS BNC Dual-Band whip is a 396mm flexible antenna with a BNC connector for Icom, Vertex, and select Motorola and Kenwood handhelds, plus compatible Uniden and Whistler scanners. It is the same length and construction as HYS's own SMA-Female 771N, just in BNC form, and it costs about $12, roughly two-thirds what the SMA version sells for. It also carries a much deeper review record at over 500.
The electrical numbers are identical to the SMA version because the length is identical: about 0.19 wavelengths on 2m, mediocre, and about 0.57 wavelengths on 70cm, solidly in the 5/8-wave range near the practical limit for a single element. The listing's separate 2.15 dBi (2m) and 2.5 dBi (70cm) claims are both credible against what that length can produce. Between HYS's two connector options, this BNC version is the better buy on price and review count alone; the RF performance is the same either way.
