Bingfu Dual-Band Mobile with Ground Plane

A sensible pick when your mounting surface is not a full metal roof. The included radials are a real fix, not a gimmick, and the length is well chosen for both bands.

Performance is derived from the antenna's length in wavelengths on each band it covers, not from the advertised gain. How we score →

Length versus wavelength

What 420 mm Buys You

An antenna radiates according to its length measured in wavelengths, not according to the number on the packaging. Here is where this one lands on each band it covers.

BandWavelengthThis antennaWorks out as
VHF146 MHz2053 mm0.20 λquarter wave
UHF435 MHz689 mm0.61 λ5/8 wave

Decision helper

Is this antenna right for you?

Yes, if you're…

  • Vehicles where a plain mag mount underperforms (small roof, plastic panels)
  • Dual-band VHF/UHF mobile use without drilling

Skip it, if you're…

  • Vehicles with a full metal roof (a plainer mag mount is simpler)
  • Anyone wanting a permanent NMO install

Tradeoffs

The good and the bad

What we like

  • Ships with 3+3 radial rods to fix a marginal ground plane
  • Strong theoretical 70cm performance (close to 5/8 wave)
  • Includes an SO-239-to-SMA adapter for handheld use too
  • No inflated gain claim to distrust

What we don't

  • Still needs a metal surface for the magnetic base itself to grip
  • 2m performance is a basic quarter wave, nothing more
  • 16.5 inches is long enough to catch on a low garage

Overview

The Bingfu ground-plane mobile antenna is a 16.5-inch (42 cm) dual-band whip on a magnetic base with a PL-259 connector, and it comes with 3 short and 3 long radial rods you screw into the base to build an artificial ground plane. At 0.20 wavelengths on 2 meters and 0.61 wavelengths on 70 centimeters, it sits right at quarter wave on VHF and close to the 5/8-wave sweet spot on UHF, so length-wise it is well proportioned for a mobile whip.

The radials matter because a magnetic base on a small metal panel, or a plastic-bodied vehicle, does not always give a quarter-wave monopole the ground plane it needs to perform as modeled. Adding them closes that gap. Reception on 70cm should be genuinely good for the format; 2m is a solid, unremarkable quarter wave. No gain is claimed on the box, so there is nothing here to second-guess.
